End of 2016

As we kick off 2017, I wanted to share some of my favorite memories from December!

First of all, a huge part of our Christmas season was the return of Bob the Elf. We had a lot of fun (and late nights) waiting to see what "Bob" would do next. Jeff has written up some brilliant captions for Facebook these last 2 years, but we'd really like to have those printed separately. So, I'm not including them here.

We took the month of December slow on the homeschool front. We took a break from our regular "My Father's World" curriculum and focused on Jesus. I've documented it on my homeschool blog, but I have to share here what my favorite part was!

I purchased a Christmas advent plan for little ones called Truth in the Tinsel. Each day, we read a bit of scripture, talked about it, and Chloe colored an ornament to stick on a giant paper Christmas tree. She learned so much and really seemed to "get" why we celebrate Christmas. I can definitely see doing this again next year and digging a little deeper in our discussions and coordinating crafts.

And here are some random things that I shared on Facebook this past month:

Chloe came running out of her room, "Mommy! I chose a BEAUTIFUL outfit since Jonny is coming today! Will you help me put on my belt?"

Jonny is our pest control guy who comes every other month. Chloe adores him. LOL

When your child is getting ready to go to a wedding in the evening and perform in a Christmas program the next morning, and she runs in and says, "Look mama! I drew a mustache on myself so I can look grumpy!"

Sigh. Being Chloe's mom is an adventure.

Chloe is such a natural entertainer. She has been looking forward to performing in her homeschool group's Christmas program. She had a line to say: "C is for the Child born that night to be our light." And she even had a solor part in Go Tell It On The Mountain.

She was completely in her element. Her facial expression was so serious, and she even held her arms out wide on the last night of Holly Jolly Christmas. The only thing that bothered her was when she asked afterward if that was her real concert. When I told her that it was, she said, "then why wasn't I on a stage?"

Hmmmmm I'm thinking she's becoming skilled in more than just math.

"Hey mama, you know how when I want to watch Netflix, it asks for that code that you have to type in for me? Well good news! I figured it out and did it all by myself!" - Chloe, age 4, reminding mom to change the PIN on the Netflix account.

Kendra came home from college the week before Christmas with her boyfriend Logan. While it was rough not having her Christmas day, we still made the best out of it!

We never made it out to Prairie Pines to see our favorite Santa this year, but Chloe was thrilled to get to see the big guy at Botanica just before Christmas. Her wish list this year has actually been pretty small (minus wanting a Hatchimal which is NOT happening). She just asked Santa for a surprise.

While Sissy & Logan were here, Chloe put on an amazing concert right in our living room! She planned out a set list and turned the ottoman into a stage. We even dimmed the lights and put a spotlight on her. It was epic!

We spent all day Christmas Eve volunteering at church during several services. Chloe was thrilled to get to hang out in KidzWorld all day. They even had a live nativity!

We got home just in time for her to put out 2 cookies that she decorated especially for Santa (and carrots for the reindeer, of course!).

Christmas day was a little unusual for us since we had celebrated early. Chloe got to open her present from Santa (a toy cash register) and a handful of things that we had put aside for her from us.

and then we did something that I think is destined to become a new tradition for our family... we went to the movies!

Chloe cracked us up because she didn't immediately know what we were doing. We told her we had a surprise, and when she finally figured out that we were in the movie theater parking lot, we asked her to guess the movie (hint: it's one she's been asking for since she first started seeing the previews). She was clueless. Jeff finally said, "ok, I'll give you a hint, the name of the movie is something that you did while Sissy was here." Her answer? "Pretend to cry?" LOL We can't even make this stuff up. The answer was actually "Sing."

Hands down, Chloe's absolute favorite Christmas gift is the Amazon Echo Dot. I woke up this morning to her saying, "Alexa, what is your favorite color?" "Alexa, what are you allergic to?" LOL And, of course, she LOVES that she can listen to her music any time she wants. It isn't unusual to hear her in the middle of the night saying, "Alexa, play Tangerine Dream!"

Once Christmas was over and before Jeff had to go back to work, I knew that I wanted to take him to this all-you-can-eat sushi place for lunch. I'm not a sushi girl myself (though I had a few pieces that were good), but it's his favorite. Chloe was fascinated, and we had to do a crash course on Japan before lunch. She loved looking it up on the globe, seeing what a kimono looks like, and even watching a video tutorial on how to use chop sticks.

Jan 2 -

This morning, I was startled to hear Chloe yell out, “NOOOO!” from a dead sleep. I ran to her room to see if she was ok -

C: Oh. I was having a bad dream, and I thought it was real.

Me: I’m sorry, baby! That happens to me sometimes. What was your dream about?

C: Well, daddy was teaching me to make rainbow poop using different colored glow sticks. I put it in the potty and went to get your phone so I could take a picture of it. When I went back to the bathroom, Daddy was about to flush it!!!!!!

Chloe's prayer today: "... and please please please, when I'm a grown-up, let me have twins named Isabella and Frank. Amen."

At the rate she's going, I'm probably going to have to get a storage building just to hold her journals, notebooks, and binders.

Fall 2016

As I write this post at the end of November, our homeschool life is in full swing, and we are quickly approaching Christmas. I figured I should take time to update before I get even further behind!

I've been keeping our homeschooling blog updated, but I keep letting this one get pushed to the backburner. The blogs serve different purposes, so I hate to let this one go. I need to just make an appointment with myself to update more often so that it isn't such a chore when I do sit down to do it.

First up, some random posts that I've shared on facebook over the past 3 months. Many things were posted on our homeschool blog, so I'll try not to include the school-related ones here.

Aug 18 -

Today's the day. My baby girl is off to start a new chapter in her life as a Belmont University Bruin. She'll be nearly 700 miles away, but I know she's going to do great things. I'm so very very proud of her. It's an AMAZING feeling watching your kids chase their dreams!

I keep hearing these lyrics by Sidewalk Prophets running through my head, and they are SO accurate:

Aug 24 -

We read a book today called "Sun Bread" as we've been studying the sun. Since today is the last day of our unit, we decided to make our own "sun bread." As we were mixing the ingredients, Chloe says, "What if we put REAL gas in our bread since the sun is actually made of gas?" Then she cracked all the way up, and said, "I"m just joking. That would be silly!" LOL She's a geek.

Spent some time with our friends Jon& Kelly the other night and checked out their Oculus Rift system. Chloe even got into it...technically...almost literally. lol

Sep 3 -

Nothing like being awakened out of a dead sleep by a huge earthquake! That's how my Saturday started! (at 7am this morning... I'm just now getting around to posting about it).

We're all fine (it was a 5.6 in Oklahoma, but we felt it STRONGLY up here). I don't know how many of these my poor 1918-built house can handle before it topples down on us though!

Sept 10 -

You know what I'm discovering that I LOVE about homeschooling? The flexibility! I love that there is no one-size-fits-all model... even among people using the same curriculum. If 100 of us are using the kindergarten curriculum I'm using, you'll likely have 100 different ways that the program looks in our houses. Seriously, people, isn't that AWESOME!?

For me, these next couple of weeks, the flexibility means that we are taking a tiny break from our main curriculum because I have a big work deadline, we have guests from out of state coming to spend 4 days with us, I have a huge program to prepare for at church, and we have 2 field trip days with friends in town.

So, we'll take some days completely off. Some days we'll work on phonics, reading lots of books, playing some math & learning games, and probably throw in some free creative time (she loves to just make her own creations when handed art supplies). And you know what? That's OK! We are going to school year-round, so I don't feel rushed to get to a certain point by a certain time of the year.

And when we start back with the apple unit in a couple of weeks, there are so many fun extra things that I want to do that we may just stretch it out for 7 or 8 days!

Seriously, this has me SO excited!!

Sept 28 -

10:30pm Chloe comes out from her bed (where she should've been sleeping for about an hour and a half).

C - Hi mommy. I just need my scissors.

me - Um. I don't think so. Why do you need scissors?

C - (sheepishly) I just need to cut something.

me - That's not happening, babe. What do you want to cut?

C - Just my pets (her stuffed animals). I'm playing with them in my bed.

Uuuuummm, at least she's honest? This ended with whining about how now she'll NEVER get to cut things ever again.

I'm sure all you other moms would let your 4 yr old take scissors to bed in the middle of the night, so I'm probably the meanest mom ever.

Sept 29 -

Late start on school this morning because she needed to illustrate her dream after breakfast. She does this often. Thinking i should have her start a dream journal. (Side note, we HAVE started a dream journal, and she now writes in it at least a few times a week)

Oct 3 -

Survival advice from Chloe (age 4): If your mommy & daddy tell you that you're going on a nature walk in the desert, you can just take a rope with you in case you fall in some quicksand. That way your mommy or daddy can pull you out!

Oct 14 -

Chloe was correcting her friend today when he wasn't listening to his mother. I said, "Chloe, his mama is handling this. You need to stay out of it. She will be the one to tell him what he needs to do."

She puts her hands on her hips, turns to me and says, "I. am. TEACHING. him!"

Later, while getting in the car, she says, "I can't wait til I'm a grown-up so I can tell kids what to do."

Ooooooooh boy!

So we're watching Supergirl on Netflix as a "Faminey" when I pause the show to ask Chloe if she knows what the "green stuff" is. Chloe looks square at me and replies, "Kryptonite. It makes Supergirl and Superman get into bad trouble like laying down and not getting up. I learned it on Hobby Kids!".... Libby and I looked at each other, shook our heads, and un-paused the show. lol

"Ummm Mommy? I know you usually make really good toast, but today my toast is a little too dark. It's pretty yucky. Sometimes when you leave the toast in the toaster too long, it gets too dark. And you know I like light toast." - Chloe, age 4

Spent a couple of hours at Sedgwick County Park yesterday with Chloe. She found a new "friend" wearing another Jack-O-Lantern shirt, and they pwayed and pwayed!! Too bad the little girl is from Minnesota and just visiting her grandma.

Chloe loves retelling the Bible stories that they learn in church. Tonight, she was telling us about how Moses led the "laser lights" out of Egypt.

Oct 23 -

Spending some time being silly with our little family this morning. We were making up jokes, and Chloe (who admittedly usually doesn't have anything that makes sense) came up with 2 doozies:

- What did the kid say to the other kid?
- Maaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!
(she clarified it was because they were goats. LOL)

Second joke:

- What did the kid say to the goat?
- We're both goats!

*rimshot*

Oct 30 -

I was tied up at church volunteering for Judgement House, so Jeff took Chloe out Trunk or Treating at a local church and then out for pizza at Knolla's. Chloe was initially hesitant because the cheeseburger pizza had both pickle and onion. You can see that she was soon a big fan!

We had a blast dressing up as a family and going out trick or treating with Jeff's friend Ivett from work and her 2 boys Andy & Liam.

This picture of Chloe is my absolute favorite. I entered it in a local costume contest and won a $25 gc to a children's clothing consignment event!

Nov 2 -

Every day for school, we go outside and observe the weather to record on our weather chart. Today, Chloe says, "I predict it will be sunny. Or cloudy. Or partly cloudy. Or rainy."

So, we go outside to check.

"Yep! I was right! It's cloudy today!"

I think she has a definite future as a meteorologist.

Nov 3 -

I was explaining to Chloe a little about the election in VERY simple terms. Basically that the President is sorta like the boss of the United States and that we get to go vote to choose a new President. I mean, she's 4, so she doesn't need to know much more than that, right?

So, she asked who we vote for, so I was telling her the names of the candidates that we could choose from, and she says:

"I want Donald Trump cause it sorta sounds like Donald Duck, and I do like Mickey Mouse."

That's as good a reason as any, right? LOL

Nov 7 -

Chloe has jokingly referred to her daddy as a "stinky boy" for a long time now (thanks to her Aunt Andria! LOL). Today, she said, "I think instead of 'stinky boy' we should say that daddy is an 'awesome boy' cause he's really awesome at building stuff."

Talk about a promotion!

Chloe's bedtime prayer tonight ended with, "And please let my sissy love brownies."

Clearly she has some unresolved issues with the fact that Kendra (my weird child) doesn't like brownies.

"Hey Mommy, did you know about Dillons Clicklist? You can order what you want on the computer, and when you get there, they have everything ready for you! You don't even have to wait!" - Chloe, age 4, schooling mom on the power of advertising.

Apparently, I'm now the mom of a 4 year old vlogger. I found Chloe today with her Kindle Fire recording a video she called "Chloe's Corner." She just invited me on for an episode. She keeps referencing "people at home." LOL (Is this a sign she watches too much YouTube?)

She also worked on a lineup of songs that I expect will be in future episodes. These are a few of the "Chloe Originals" that she sang for us tonight:

- Don't forget to wash your pants in the dishwasher
- Why did you hit me in the face, little dog?
- Oh little box, what will i put in you
- This song will crack your pants off
- Oh no, where did it go? i forgot to get my dog.

me: <sobbing> Oh no! I'm so sad! I miss my girl!

C: Oh hi, Mommy. Did you just see that mean haunted lion?
me: Yes, he was really scary! I was so worried about you!
C: Oh, I'm sorry. I was on holiday. I went to Mt. Everest. It's the highest mountain in town. It's SO beautiful there. You should really see the view.

Summer 2016

WOW!!! I am so so so far behind on posting here. Things have been so crazy this summer. Once school let out, Jeff spent 2 weeks in California. Then my sister & her family came here for a week. Then Kendra & her boyfriend came for a few days. In between all of that, we decided to start homeschooling THIS fall instead of next. So, I've been in a crazy whirlwind trying to get everything ready for that. Decided I should take some time to hit the highlights of the summer before it turns to fall!

Here are a few random facebook posts and photos from the past 3 months.

On May 8, Kendra went to her senior prom with her friend Logan. He was so sweet and gave her the "promposal" she'd always wanted with a scavenger hunt all over town leading up to meeting him at the high school with a big banner asking her to go to prom. It was super sweet! While they were "just friends" for prom, they started seeing each other exclusively and are now pretty much inseparable.

Funny story about her dress - She'd always wanted to go prom dress shopping with me, but since she lives so far away, that hasn't been possible. So, one day over spring break, we took Chloe to preschool while we went dress shopping. At the time, she didn't have a date and didn't even really have a dress in mind that she wanted. She'd described her perfect dress to me, but who knew if that even existed? So, she tried on lots of dresses, but nothing really jumped out at her. As we were leaving, I suggested that we walk through Von Maur just to see what they had. When we saw this dress on the rack, we knew IMMEDIATELY it was the dress. She tried it on, and it fit beautifully. She was sad to have to walk away from it, but she found the same dress online for about $100 cheaper. So, her grandparents bought it for her!

Doing some math workbook pages at Chloe's request today. Initially she only colored in one box for butterflies. After she moved on, she said, "oops! There are actually 2 butterflies! I didn't see the other one. He was camouflaged! Cheeky little butterfly!"

Doing some phonics work with chloe today. She was reading simple CVC words that i spelled out. Then she told me she wanted me to read one that she spelled. "Bucket" Homeschooling is gonna be a trip!

Well, it's official. This girl is FINISHED with high school! She took her last AP Exam today and doesn't have to go back! Graduation is next week!

Seriously... see that little kindergarten grad on the left there? I swear that was just yesterday. Mamas of littles, trust me when I say that it will go by WAY faster than you ever imagined. Those stressful, trying phases that you think will never end... they do.

Don't get me wrong; I'm super proud and excited for her. Just feeling a little melancholy over the idea that my baby isn't a baby anymore.

May 12 -

Midweek family fun day! Zoo field trip with Chloe's preschool this morning complete with picnic lunch. Then play time at the park & a matinee of Captain America Civil War! Back to real life now. Lol

This "last day of kindergarten" pic seems like it was just yesterday, and today we prepare to celebrate her high school graduation! Special mom/daughter dinner tonight and graduation tomorrow. I'm gonna need lots of tissues... I'm already crying and the festivities haven't even started yet! So very proud of my Kendra Grace!

Andria: Chloe, what do you put on your toast?

C: (with a "I can't believe you just asked that" look) ummmm... a little bit of butter?

Andria: (laughing) yes, I have.

C: Ooooh! So you just forgot what goes on toast?

This was followed by the sweetest bedtime prayer where she asked God to help her clean up her toys without mommy & daddy asking her to AND to help her decide what she wants to be when she grows up.

C: Mommy, can fabric break?
me: Well, it can tear or rip, but it doesn't really "break"
C: Is Bobby made out of fabric?
me: Yep, he sure is!
C: I am VERY careful with Bobby cause I never want to tear him. I only suck my thumb GENTLY with him. Or sometimes pretend he's a picnic blanket. But I'm gentle.

Oooooooookay then.

Chloe has been asking for a haircut cause her hair was "too yong." It's a little shorter than i intended, but she is thrilled! She does look pretty darn cute! Also, isn't it a shame that she isn't more expressive?

For the first mommy & daughter movie night while Daddy is in California, Chloe is choosing the PERFECT film for us. She has no fewer than 30 DVDs spread out on the living room floor. She's narrowed it down to Elf on The Shelf or Mickey's Monster Musical. She doesn't believe in conforming to society's use of a calendar to tell us when to celebrate holidays. LOL

C: Uh oh! I accidentally made an M. That's ok! I'll just write "Mom" instead!

Skyping with daddy tonight. I'm married to a comedian.

"Hey mama, take my picture! What 'commotion' should I do first? How about 'worried'?"

("emotions" clockwise from top left: worried, happy, scared, silly, sad, angry, surprised)

Tonight at bedtime, Chloe was super fussy and didn't want to get in bed.

After I got firm with her and told her in no uncertain terms that she WAS going to bed, she snapped, "Oh yeah? Well I don't want to be your friend anymore!"

I told her that made me sad because I loved her and still wanted to be her friend... but she was still going to bed either way.

Fast forward about 5 minutes to when I'm tucking her in. She bursts into tears and gave me a big hug and said, "I'm sorry I said I didn't want to be your friend anymore! I do want to be your friend! I didn't mean it! Can we pray and tell God we're sorry for being mean?"

So she prays...

"Dear God... thank you for today. Please help me have good sleep and not be scared of the fire balloons (long story - Right Jeff?). And please help me be sorry for being mean to mama and let me be her friend again. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Chloe has decided what she wants to be when she grows up.

On Mondays, she will be a veterinarian.
On Tuesdays, she will be a police officer.
On Wednesdays, she will be a detective.
On Thursdays, she will be a teacher ("pet" teacher perhaps).
On Fridays, she will be a chef.
On Saturdays, she will be an artist.

And of course, she'll rest on the Sabbath.

Sounds like a very busy schedule to me!

Chloe has this little pink plastic bug that she got out of a treasure chest at the hair salon. Tonight, she spent the evening moving the bug from one location to another waiting for us to scream in horror as we discovered it. She'd then laugh hysterically and say, "Haha! I pranked you!" before running off to hide it (in plain sight) of the other parent.

This prompted her to add another job to her weekly line-up (see previous post). She wants to be a "bug take-awayer" because "Bug Take-Awayer Chloe is brave of bugs!" She's the best bug take-awayer in "the whole galaxy."

We went down to the river and watched the most amazing fireworks display this year for the 4th of July. Chloe was mesmerized! She was SO into all the excitement. This will have to be a new family tradition, for sure!

Tonight, Chloe wanted to look at a map, and we were talking about people that we know who live in different states. She started asking about "That lady who gave me the purple blanket."

I could not figure out who she was talking about. She went on to say this lady had a puppy and a bird in a cage and a "rocking chair with another rocking chair."

Seriously I had no clue, but she was so serious and insistent. She wouldn't give up until we figured it out.

As we prepare to start our first year of homeschooling, I asked Chloe to tell me 3 things that she wanted to learn this year. Here's her list:

1. to make play-doh
2. to read (specifically "to read a book")
3. about the moon (she loves planets & space stuff)

Chloe is currently building "a machine to take over the world" out of PVC pipe. She is SO her father's daughter. LOL

Ok, I have to share this with you guys. This is a card 4 year old Chloe made for our friend Lily's baby shower this evening. She grabbed some paper and her markers and went off of to do her thing. I didn't see her again til she was finished.

At first it looked like she'd made a bunch of random letters underneath the picture of her holding the baby's hand. I asked her what it said. She said, "Well, I made a mistake on my drawing. I was trying to draw my tongue, but I messed up. So, I wrote 'I'm not peeing.' so people wouldn't think it was pee pee."

Upon closer inspection, I saw that she really HAD written "IM NOT PEYEN"

haaaaaaaaa! I can't even make this stuff up. I suppose I should at least be proud of the way she sounded out the words? LOL Isn't motherhood a trip?

Oh and the blue lines at the top are the "shower" on the baby. LOL

Chloe (4) and I were playing this alphabet bingo game yesterday. We draw a letter from a stack of cards and then we can mark anything on our card that starts with that letter.

So, I called the letter "D."

Chloe: Ummmm... is this (pointing to bottom left corner) a book or a dictionary? Cause I think it's a dictionary, and that starts with D.

You know I had to give it to her with that kind of logic. LOL

Kendra & Logan (her boyfriend) came to visit us a couple of weeks ago. We had the BEST time doing fun vacationy stuff with them (Logan even declared his love for the game Jeff invented, so Jeff has now offered Kendra's hand in marriage. LOL) Here are a few pics from their visit...
